  • Jul 20, 2020 I have prepared an innovative PMP ITTO excel spreadsheet based on the PMBOK Guide 6th edition. It contains ITTO for 5 Process Groups (PG), 9 Knowledge Areas (KA), and 49 processes. The excel sheet is quite different and much more beneficial from anything else that you might have seen.

This is a question I see a lot on the Internet:

How do I memorize ITTO for the PMP test?

(Before we begin, mastering ITTO means memorizing the 47 PMP processes of PMBOK 5.)

Mastering ITTO – A 5 Minute Video

Among other things, I provide private Skype consulting on passing the PMP test. For recent clients, they keep asking “how to master ITTO”. This is becoming my standard (and still useful) answer.

You can find all of my PMP videos on YouTube.

Mastering ITTO – A 16 Minute Video

Okay, perhaps you want even more detail on different techniques for learning/mastering ITTO. Here’s a 16 minute YouTube video of mine that has been watched by over 22,000 people as of 12/20/2014.

Memorize the 47 Processes

If you haven’t perfectly memorized the PMP 47 processes, you need to do that immediately. Perhaps you’ll consider purchasing my PMP 47 spreadsheet.

On November 5, 2014 at PMZilla, a customer and new PMP named Will (last name withheld upon request), wrote this about my 47 PMP processes spreadsheet.

I purchased Richard Kraneis’ “47 Processes Spreadsheet” for $4.99. This was extremely helpful, and I would say instrumental in me learning the 47 processes. This was the most cost effective PMP resource that I purchased.

Thanks Will.

How to Memorize the 5th Edition PMBOK
618 ITTO's
& the 47 PMP Processes
I passed the PMP test on 2/19/2015. In preparing for the test I used
several of the resources from PMP Prepcast: https://www.project-management-prepcast.com/
  1. 40 Hours of Podcast Classroom Teaching -- fulfilled PMI Contact Hours requirement
  2. PrepCast Formula Examples and Study
  3. PrepCast Exam Simulator http://exam.pm-exam-simulator.com/
In their notes recommending how to study for the test, the Prepcast recommended NOT to memorize the ITTO's but rather to understand them.
I also took a 13 Week Class offered by our local PMI of Northeast Ohio as
a Study Group for the PMP Exam. (See Below for Details for Cleveland, Ohio)
When I joined the PMI they recommended joining a study group with your local PMI. I am sure your local PMI would have classes as well.
  • Bob Gombeda, former President of PMINEO is the instructor. Many of the points he covered in class were on the PMP test. He too said not to memorize the ITTO's but understand their logic and major inputs and outputs.

  • Other resources I read pointed to the fact that you cannot pass the test without understanding the ITTO's. I came up with a way to categorize the major inputs and outputs without the need to memorize. I also came up with a quick method to memorize the 47 processes quickly and permanently. ( coming later)

My Solution to the ITTO Memorization Problem
In my practice tests using the exam simulator from Prepcast, I found that if I did not
  1. Memorize the 47 Processes (you must)
  2. Know, almost by heart all of the 618 ITTO's: Input, Tools & Techniques, and Outputs
NOTE: I could score as low as 40% on any one section of the test, if I didn't know the 47 processes and what the Inputs, Tools & Techniques, and Outputs were for each process. Also, I seemed to forget from day to day, even after I learned them. I needed a permanent way to know the ITTO's
I created a spreadsheet that COLOR CODED all of the ITTO's based on the document type and afterwards would immediately score 70-80% on the same tests.

Many online resources said that knowledge of the ITTO's is the key to passing/failing of the PMP exam. I agree.

Everything is cross-referenced to the section of the PMBOK, and I have double checked

Other Resources that I found very Helpful
  1. PMI PMP Exam - Edward Chung--FREE Study Notes--All 13 Chapters of the PMBOK

  2. PMP Prepcast--PrepCast Short Guide to the PMBOK 'non drowsy'

  3. PMP Exam Success Series: Bootcamp Manual (with Exam Sim App)Paperback– April 22, 2013 (Every resource said you need another resource other than the PMBOK. This is the book we used in the PMI Study group

  4. I also used both the KINDLE and Paper copy of the PMBOK. Kindle was good for referencing, but the paperback helped for thorough reading of the book and outlining it. I purchased both of these from Amazon.com
